The Empathy Questionnaire for Children and Young Adults (EmQue-CA) is an externally validated psychometric measure of children’s empathy skills; it was developed by the University of Leiden. Measures are taken at three intervals to detect any change over time.
Using a simple Google form, the questions are designed to measure pupils’ affective and cognitive empathy and their
pro-social concern. All pupil data collected is anonymized and unique IDs are used in place of names.
Reading Questionnaire
The reading questionnaire is a based on the Open University’s approach. It is combined with the EmQue-CA survey and captures enjoyment of reading. It is completed at three intervals to establish change over time and is also collected via
a Google form
Parent's Questionnaire
This Survey Monkey questionnaire asks parents/carers to report on any changes and picks up how the work in school is being reflected at home. Completed twice during the programme.
Lead Teacher Presentation
Lead teachers and pupils work together through the year to create a presentation describing their empathy journey.
It evaluates areas of the programme – e.g. use of Storykits; participation in Empathy Day, and Empathy Conversations with groups of children. We provide a Powerpoint template that grows throughout the 18 months.
Pupil Work
Teachers collect examples of pupils’ empathy work as well as recording observations of children demonstrating acts of empathy or changed behaviour.
Outcomes Questionnaires
These are completed at the end of the programme. There are two versions.
Lead Teacher and SLT team reflect on the impact on key plans and priorities.
Teachers and other staff reflect on changes they have seen, and impact on target outcomes.
