Activity

Empathy Day briefing

1-hour online briefing giving an (embargoed) insight into the Empathy Day programme and update on progress

School initiates the nomination process and plans the Awards Ceremony

1: Pupils continue to explore the books/characters that they might nominate.

2: School plans The Empathys event.

3: Nominations process for Empathy Awards begins (could be done as home/school Easter holidays activity).

Pupils nominate the characters who show exceptional empathy. This can be done by:

  • Each class nominating a character
  • Individual children nominating characters (although you are likely to receive a lot of suggestions)
  • Year groups each nominating a number of characters

We suggest a shortlist of 6-10 characters (if you receive lots of nominations you may have to set up a selection panel – e.g. school council or school librarians). Shortlist announced in an assembly or special event (late April or early May).

4: Recruit a team of pupils to plan the Empathys Award ceremony, front of house, technical crew, compère, reporter, photographer, blogger etc. Encourage them to be as creative as possible.

5: Pupils plan to campaign for their character and date set for the vote
