P3 Overview

PHASE 3 - IMPLEMENTING TEACHING TOOLS AND RESOURCES
Phase 3 Overview

This is not a bolt-on programme. It is designed to enhance and subtly refocus your existing teaching and activities. In helps to have a spirit of Lab-like enquiry – testing things together; seeing what works and sharing that practice. There is a wide range of resources, and we welcome ideas for new ones from partner schools.

“EmpathyLab has been invaluable in helping me step back and analyse how I can immerse children in stories in a way which enables classroom dialogue about feelings. This drives improvement in relationships, wellbeing and standards in reading and writing.”

KEY ACTIONS FOR

THIS STAGE

  • Once you have baselined pupils’ skills, deliver sessions starting with assemblies to teach children about empathy

  • Familiarise yourself with all the supporting materials available in the Resource Portal

  • Begin to use the EmpathyLab tools in classrooms and across the school

  • Monitor and support as necessary

  • Introduce EmpathyLab work to the wider school community

In Phase 3 you move into teaching pupils about empathy, using all the programme tools. These help you develop an understanding of empathy through classroom and whole school activities. They also help you develop the creative, enjoyable experiences that can be pivotal in deepening empathy skills and ethos.
The teaching tools specific to classroom practice are:

• Assemblies for primary and secondary
• Book lists
• Book practice tools, e.g. Empathy Storykits
• Empathy Bookspotters, the start of pupil-led work
• Listening resources
• Author/illustrator resources
• Whole school display templates
• Kitbag – templates and work sheets to support these areas of work
