P3 Booklists

PHASE 3 - IMPLEMENTING TEACHING TOOLS AND RESOURCES
Booklists: help with choosing empathy-rich books

Every year EmpathyLab works with the publishing industry and an expert panel to choose a very diverse, contemporary Read For Empathy book collection. This covers Early Years to top KS3 including picture books, graphic novels, poetry and novels.

Each collection comes with a Guide you can use to pick books for particular areas of empathy work, and also give to families.

We use these criteria for empathy-rich books

Try using them to choose suitable books

  • General/overall: high quality writing/illustrations with expertly crafted characters which readers care about. Book helps explore characters’ feelings and motivations

  • Challenges tribal thinking: book explores themes about building understanding between individuals and communities

  • Supports development of key empathy skills: perspective-taking (e.g. through different characters’ points of view); emotion recognition/vocabulary; active listening; ability to put empathy into action

  • Tackles key empathy issues of the day: e.g. refugees, homelessness, loneliness

  • Provides insight into other challenging life circumstance: e.g. bereavement; mental illness; disability
