A Differentiated Programme
Empathy Awards (Primary)
Designed to involve the whole school (although can also be used with specific year groups or classes). Celebrates empathy in stories and supports children to discuss and vote for book characters who either role model great empathy or inspire feelings of empathy.
The award programme encourages reading for pleasure introducing children to a broad range of books, engages families and generates a zest for reading.
The Empathys (Secondary)
A pupil-led programme called The Empathys where pupils grant awards to book characters that show exceptional empathy. Most secondary schools choose to focus this largely on Years 7 and 8.
The programme injects pupil leadership and an awards process to generate excitement around learning about empathy. As young teenagers move into adulthood, it provides a turbo-charging boost of empathy learning and experiences, helping with understanding relationships, developing a deeper understanding of the world and issues of social justice.
