Empathy Reflections

How to:

During your Empathy Chat, or in any other conversations, practice empathy skills by using our five-point listening guide.

Five-point listening guide

For younger children

  • print out the five-point guide and place it where everyone can see it as a reminder – or make and decorate your own poster version
  • focus on one point each day over the festival – practice that aspect of listening during all conversations that day. Invite the children to kindly remind each other
  • discuss why it may not be helpful to give advice. Are there times when it is useful to offer advice?

For older children and young people

  • print the five points off and stick into a diary or planner as a daily reminder
  • discuss the points – which ones do they find most difficult? Can they challenge themselves to practice over the festival?
  • are they better listeners in different environments – what about at school or at home? Why does it change?
